With the rising cost of article processing charges (APCs) becoming a global issue, Science and Technology of Advanced Materials (STAM), and its sister journal, Science and Technology of Advanced Materials: Methods (STAM Methods) launch a new APC-free campaign supported by NIMS and Empa. Under certain conditions, authors will be exempted from the APC, which is normally 131,000 yen (for STAM) or 87,300 yen (for STAM Methods), and will be able to publish their article open access for free.

As an international academic journal, STAM has been a pioneer in promoting open science by becoming a Gold Open Access journal with no subscription fee in 2008, with the mission of disseminating trends in the field of materials science to the world. In addition, amid soaring article publication fees and challenges to the fair dissemination of research results, NIMS has worked with Empa to make STAM APC free until the end of FY2025, the 25th anniversary of STAM’s launch. At the end of this campaign, in order to accelerate the publication of data, which is of great significance in promoting materials research in the context of open science, NIMS will fully support the publication fee provided that the paper including the data is registered in the NIMS repository (MDR). This campaign also applies to the sister journal STAM Methods.

When submitting through the submission site of each journal, please select “yes” in the box asking if you would like to register for MDR.
